Question

PLZ help!

A parallel-plate capacitor having plates 6.4 cm apart is connected across the terminals of a 12 V battery. Being as quantitative as you can, describe the location of the equipotential surface that is at a potential of 6.2 V relative to the potential of the negative plate. Avoid the edges of the plates. Express your answer using two significant figures. Do the same for the equipotential surface that is at 1.4 V relative to the negative plate. Express your answer using two significant figures. What is the potential gradient between the plates? Express your answer using two significant figures.

Explanation / Answer

Part A)

E = electric field = potential difference between the plates/ saperation of plates = 12 /0.064

E = 187.5 volts /m

r = distance from the negative plate

V = electric potential at distance "r"

V = E r

6.2 = (187.5) r

r = 0.033 m

r = 3.3 cm

b)

r = distance from the negative plate

V = electric potential at distance "r" = 1.4

V = E r

1.4 = (187.5) r

r = 0.0075

r = 0.75 cm

c)

Potential gradient = 187..5
