Question
A demo related problem-You've seen on the Sunday mastering HW and in class this week (hopefully!). Imagine you're standing on top of a train that is travelling east at a constant velocity V_T. You throw a ball straight up into the air with initial velocity V_B. All answers should be in terms of g, V_B and V_T as needed. How long does the ball spend in the air What is the ball's horizontal acceleration? How far east does it travel? What is your horizontal acceleration? How far east do you travel? At what angle above the horizontal does an observer on the side of the road see you launch the ball? Re-do parts a through c assuming the train has an acceleration of g/2.Explanation / Answer
6
Velocity of Train , Vt.
Initial Velocity of Ball, Vb.
(a)
Vy = Vb - g*t
t = Vb/g
Time of flight, = 2*t = (2*Vb)/g
Time ball spends in the air, = (2*Vb)/g
(b)
Horizontal acceleration of ball, = 0
Distance travelled by ball, = Horizontal Speed * time
D = Vt * (2*Vb)/g
D = (2*Vb*Vt) / g
(c)
As the train is travelling at constant velocity,
Horizontal acceleration = 0
We also travel the same distance in Horizontal direction as ball, = (2*Vb*Vt) / g
(d)
Angle = tan^-1( Vb/Vt)
