Question

Work each of the following problems in your homework notebook, showing all work to receive full credit. Each question will be scored on a 0, 1, 2 scale for a total homework grade of 10 points. Two cyclists are competing in a 20.0 km time trial. The first cyclist rides at a speed of 32.0 km/hr and the second rides at a speed of 40.0 km/hr. How much time does the faster cyclist beat the slower cyclist by? Give your answer in seconds. (450 s) A fan cart is given an initial velocity of 3 m/s from a starting position of 0.50 m. using the velocity-time graph for the motion of the cart shown below, answer the following questions What is the cart's position at 2 s, 3 s and 4 s? (4.5 m, 5 m, 4.5 m) What is the cart's acceleration? (-1 m/s/s) Does the cart ever reverse direction? If so, how do you know and at what time and position? (Yes)

Explanation / Answer

1. time taken = distance / speed

for fast cyclist: t1 = 20 / 40 = 0.5 hr

for slow cyclist: t2 = 20 / 32 = 0.625 hr

time diff = t2- t1 = 0.125 hr

t(in sec) = 0.125 x 3600 = 450 sec
