Question

Item 10 tu one way to monitor global warming is to measure o the average temperature of the ocean. Researchers are doing this by measuring the time it takes sound pulses to travel underwater over large distances. At a depth of 1000 m, where ocean temperatures hold steady near 4°C, the Ans average sound speed is 1480 m/s. It's known from laboratory measurements that the sound speed increases 4.0 m/s for every 1.0 C increase in temperature. In one experiment, where sounds near California are detected in the South C Pacific, the sound waves travel 7700 km

Explanation / Answer

let speed=v m/s

distance=d meters

time=t seconds

then v=d/t

(change in v)/v=(change in d)/d + (change in t)/t

here d is measured without any uncertainty

so change in v=(v/t)*change in t

here nominal values are :

v=1480 m/s

t=7700*1000/1480=5202.7 seconds

then change in v=(1480/5202.7)*1

=0.284467

as change in temperature=(1/4)*change in v=(1/4)*0.284467=0.0711 degree celcius

so smallest temperature change that can be measured is 0.0711 degree celcius
