Question

A particle with charge fq_1 = +5.2 mu C is located at x = 0, and a second particle with charge q_2 = -2.6 mu C is located at x = 15 cm. Determine the location of a third particle with charge q_1 = +4.0 mu C such that the net electric field at x = 25 cm is zero. The figure below shows a dipole (not drawn to scale). If the positive particle has a charge of 31.5 mC and the particles are 2.46 mm apart, what is the (approximate) electric field at point A located 2.00 m above the dipole's midpoint? E = N/C

Explanation / Answer

Here, let the position of the particle is x

the charge must be placed at a point left of point x = 25 cm

for the net zero electric field

k * q1/25^2 + k * q2/(25 - 15)^2 + k * q3/(25 - x)^2 = 0

5.2/25^2 - 2.6/(25 - 15)^2 + 4.9/(25 - x)^2 = 0

solving for x

x = 8.35 cm

the charge of 4.9 uC must be placed at x = 8.35 cm
