Question

A battery is connected to a group of parallel capacitors of unequal capacitances. Which of the following statements is correct?

The voltage supplied by the battery is equal to the average voltage across all the capacitors.

The voltages across the capacitors are unequal.

The total positive charge in the circuit is equal to the sum of the positive charges on each capacitor.

All capacitors hold equal amount of charges.

Explanation / Answer

the correct answer is - the total positive charge in the circuit is equal to the sum of the positive charges on each capacitor.

Explanation- option a) is wrong because if capacitors are connected in parallel , no matter whether all have same capacitance or not, voltage across each capacitor is same and is equal to the voltage supplied by the battery, so we need not to take any average.

option b) is wrong and the reason is same as for option a)

option c) is correct because when capacitors are connected in parallel total charge is distributed among them all . , so in order to obtain total charge one has to sum up the charges on all capacitors.

option d) is wrong since charge depends on capacitance , and in this case capacitances of different capacitors are unequal so they will be holding unequal charges.

option e) is wrong ,and reason is same as for option a).
