Question
The answers are listed to each question, but I am unsure about what work to do to get the answer. I understood how to find part A, but am not sure about part B.
1A) Two small identical conducting spheres are placed with their centers 0.73 m apart. One is given a charge of 12e-9 C, the other a charge of -17e-9 C. Find the magnitude of the electrostatic force exerted on one sphere by the other.
Answer: 3.44e-6
1B) The spheres from part A are connected by a conducting wire. Find the electrostatic force between the two after equilibrium is reached, where both spheres have the same charge.
Answer: 1.05e-7
Explanation / Answer
A)Electrostatic force F =k*q1*q2/r^2 =8.99*10^9*12*10^-9*17*10^-9/0.73^2 =3.44*10^-6 N
B) Equilibrium charge after charge distribution q =(q1+q2)/2
=>q =(17-12)/2 =2.5 *10^-9C
=>F=8.99*10^9*(2.5*10^-9)^2/0.73^2 =1.054*10^-7N
