Question
The following graph shows the velocity of a car (v_z) moving along the z-axis as it slows down at a uniform rate. As you can see from the graph, at t 0 the car is moving at +40 m/s and at t = 5 s the car is moving at +10 m/s. a) What is the car's acceleration, a_x? b) How far does it travel t = 0 and t = 5 s? c) Assuming that after t = 5 s the car continues decelerate at the same constant rate as before, at what time will it be momentarily at rest before reversing its direction? d) Assuming that after t = 5 s the car continues decelerate at the same constant rate as before, at what time will it have a velocity of v_x = -20 m/s?Explanation / Answer
a) accelaration a = (V-Vo)/t = (10-40)/5= -6 m/s^2
b) S = (Vo*t) +(0.5*a*t^2)
S = (40*5)-(0.5*6*5^2) = 125 m
C) V = Vo + (a*t)
0 = 40-(6*t)
t = 6.67 sec
D) V = Vo + (a*t)
-20 = 40 -(6*t)
t = 10 sec
