Question
1. Plate Boundaries Using Google Earth. Download the Google Earth file Dynamic Earth, it will outline the different plate boundaries. Open Google Earth and go to File -Open and choose the Dynamic Earth file. If you expand the file you'll see that there are several layers that you can turn on and off. For this activity you may want to turn off the Seafloor Age, Volcanoes and Earthquake layers. Use the latitude/longitude coordinates given in the table below to determine the type of plate boundary at each location. These coordinates also match up with the descriptions in the table. Type (or copy/paste) the coordinates into the Search box in Google Earth and match up the locations and the geologic features/events to one of the listed plate boundaries. You may have to zoom out in order to see the location from the right perspective. Each letter may be used >once. A. Ocean-ocean convergent boundary B. Ocean-continent convergent boundary C. Continent-continent convergent boundary D. Divergent boundary E. Explanation / Answer
35.909°S, 72.733°W=2001 Chile earthquake epicenter, area of ocean continent subduction zone.
27.988°N 86.925°E.=Continent continent convergent boundary,Highest point on Earth. This place is still growing and the mountain ranges are gaining height.
38.322°N 142.369°E.=Ocean-ocean convergent boundary,2011 Japan 9.0 Earthquake location. This place is marked by the presence of numerous earthquakes and presence of great number of volcanoes.
35.900°N 120.433°W=Transform boundary,San Andreas Fault. Here no plate is being generated or destructed.
4°S,12.24°W=Mid atlantic ridge,divergent boundary.
46.191°N 122.194°W=Ocean-continent convergent boundary,Mt. St. Helens. Known occurrence of volcano in the continent.
11.329°N, 142.206°E=Ocean-ocean convergent boundary,Deepest point on Earth,Mariana Trench.
