Question
I'm asked to use the given pictures and graph paper to complete a diagram of the lithosphere while labeling the following parts:
a.) the lithosphere under the flat oceanic crust approximately 80km thick.
b.) the lithosphere under the Continental crust 125 km thick (80-100 under volcanic arcs.)
I simply don't understand what I'm drawing. is it a topographical map? A bird eye view? A derivative of the given graph? please help!
Explanation / Answer
Yes you are simply drawing a 3-d model map of the lithosphere. I think you are confused with the differential thickness of the lithosphere below the ocean and continent. There is nothing to be confused. Simply saying lithosphere means crust plus upper mantle. The oceanic crust is thinner (avg 5-10km) than the continental crust (normally 35km but more at the orogenic belts). So according to the theory of isostasy the more the height above the more the root below. There is a roughly calculation that the root is about 5times than the height above.
More accurately the oceanic lithosphere is 50-140km thick whereas the continental lithosphere is 40-280km thick.
