Question
Create a conduction - convection heat transfer model that predicts the wind chill temperature with respect to human body based upon outdoor temperature. Based upon your model, determine the wind chill temperature for a human body, six-foot tall, 150 lbs weight as a cylinder closed at the top and bottom when outdoor temperature is 25 degrees F and wind velocity is 15 miles per hour. Use theoretical convection heat transfer equations. Use calculator for wind chill temperature in the Internet and see how good is your model with respect to the Internet calculator. List your assumptions for this problem.Explanation / Answer
a) The formula to calculate wind chill temperature is the following:
wind chill temperature = 35.74 + 0.6215T – 35.75(V^0.16) + 0.4275T(V^0.16)
where T represents the air temperature in Fahrenheit and V represents the wind speed in miles per hour.
b)
Here T = 250F and V = 15 mile/hr
so wind chill temperature = 35.74 + 0.6215T – 35.75(V^0.16) + 0.4275T(V^0.16)
= 35.74+0.6215*25-35.75*(15^0.16)+0.4275*25*(15^0.16)
=12.620 F
