Question

The Fence experiment makes use of LoggerPro software to calculate velocities at regular time intervals as the striped plate passes through the photogate (Fig. 3). The theoretical equation is v = v_i + at where = 0 (the fence is dropped from rest) and a = g. Write Equation 4 with y = mx + b under it and circle matching factors as in the Example. What is the experimental value of the acceleration of gravity? What is its percent error from the accepted value for Baltimore, 9.80 m/s^2? Does the value of the y-intercept make sense? d. How well did the straight Trendline match the data? Picket Fence Drop Figure 3 Graph of speed versus time as calculated by LoggerPro as a picket fence falls freely through a photogate.

Explanation / Answer

part a:

v=v_i+a*t

==>v=a*t+v_i

comparing to y=m*x+b

we get m=a, b=v_i

from the given equation:

y=9.8224*x+0.0007

a=9.8224 m/s^2

v_i=0.0007 m/s

part b:
experimental value of acceleration due to gravity is 9.8224 m/s^2

percentage error=(9.8224-9.8)*100/9.8=0.2286%

part c:

y intercept is 0.0007 m/s

and as per the given information, initial velocity is 0 m/s

so it means the experimental data is not a perfect straight line

and some error does exist .

part d:

as R^2 is very high, the model and data are closely matched.
