How were Watsuji’s ideas developed to defend Japanese culture from colonial German thought?; Watsuji was one of a philosipher in Japan during the twentieth century who brought Japanese philosophy to the world. Watsuji began work on Fudo, translated to english as climate and culture. Watsuji developed his ideas around of culture and climate to defend Japanese culture from Germans ideas. Watsuji said that European ideas on culture and climate are too subjective and deterministic. Japanese culture was inferior to European culture beacuse it is inherently different. There are multiple ways of viewing climate and that is varies with time and space. Space is inextricably linked with time, and individual and social aspects of ourselves linked as well, and our history and culture are linked to climate. The way human resopnd to their environment is geographically specific dependent on values. Japan has extreme hot and cold conditions. According to Watsuji climate is shared experience rather than individual. Because of cold we must decide sources of heat for our houses, design and create appropriate clothing to defend ourselves.
Human reactions to climate are shared . An example used by watsuji is Japan's cherry blossom season, celebrated by people. In this all will drink and eat together.
