Question
A ball of mass 0.265 kg that is moving with a speed of 5.2 m/s collides head-on and elastically with another ball initially at rest. Immediately after the collision, the incoming ball bounces backward with a speed of 3.3 m/s .
Part A:
Calculate the velocity of the target ball after the collision.
Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
Part B:
Calculate the mass of the target ball.
Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
Explanation / Answer
For elastci collision,
velocity of approach = velocity of separation
5.2 = v + 3.3
v = 1.9 m/s
(A) target ball will moves with 1.9 m/s in the direction of incoming ball.
(B) Applying momentum conservation,
0.265 x 5.2 = - 0.265 x 3.3 + m x 1.9
1.378 = - 0.8745 + 1.9m
m = 1.19 kg
