Question
Given the trend and location of the 40_foot long elevation contour. If you were walking along the water's edge, how would you characteruze the topography and relief of the coastline?steep?gentle relief?
which portion (NW,NE,SE,SW) of the map has the greatest relief?
Explanation / Answer
As we know the closer the contour lines, the steeper the slope; the farther apart the contour lines, the gentler the slope. By looking at the map we find the contour lines are almost apart along the coastline so this map is having a gentle slop in the SE part of the map.
In order to determine the relief, we can calculate by calculating the difference between the two points. ie., so the various values as follows
NE = 800-64 = 736
NW= 492-40 = 452
SE=480-40 = 440
SW= No data available, As this portion of the map is occupied by Pacific ocean.
So from the above, it’s clear the NE part of the map is having the greatest relief.
