Question

What effect has the finite size of the conductive paper on the ? b) Floating insulator How does rectangular insulator distort the field? What effect would rotating the insulator through an angle of 90 degree have on the equipotentials? On the field lines? c) Parallel Plate Capacitor What is the field outside the capacitor plates? How does the ratio of the plate length (l) versus separation (d) affect the fringing effect at the edges of the plates? What redesign of the plates, or perhaps extra electrodes, could help eliminate the fringing effect?

Explanation / Answer

Fringing is the bending of the electric flux lines near the edge of the parallel plate capacitors. Fringing is also known as '' edge effect ''.
Normally the flux lines inside the capacitor are uniform and parallel. But at the edges, the flux lines are not straight and bend slightly upward due to the geometry. This is known as fringing effect.

variation in the plate separation helps in reducing the fringing effect. as the plate separation increses the significance reduces. with the reduction in the plate separation the fringing effect increses.

Also with the use of a couple of opposite charged eletrodes, the curved fringe field lines from the capacitor will be cancelled by the opposite field from the Electrodes.
