Question
Exam 2 Practice Problems from 1 shows the velocity vs time graph of an elevator moving traveling the bottom to the top floor of a building. The elevator accelerates upwards for 10 s, then moves at a constant velocity of 5 m/s for 12.5 s, and then slows down for 7.5 s before coming to rest. A) Using the graph find the acceleration for each of the three parts of the trip. Figure 1: Velocity s time graph of an elevator ride, Draw a free-body diagram for each of the three parts of the trip. Make sure the relative lengths of the vectors is correct. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3Explanation / Answer
A. Acceleration in the first part = 5/10 = .5 m/s^2
For the second part of the trip, the lift is moving with a constant velocity and hence the acceleration is zero.
For the last part a=(0-5)/7.5 = -.667 m/s^2
