When we are standing close a mirror a large part of rays from some light source are reflected from our body and they fall onto the mirror forming a large image. When we are far apart lesser number of rays are reflected from our body and hence forming a tiny image. Its very similar to our vision, when a person is standing close by he appears to be large but when standing far away he appears rather tiny.
