A) they are driven by wind B) they are driven by temperature C) they are driven by gravity D) they are always rapid and powerful E) they are driven by density differences Question 23 (4 points) Which is not considered a greenhouse gas: A) water vapor B) halocarbons C) nitrous oxide D) all are greenhouse gases Question 24 (4 points) As oceans warm, gases like CO2 are less soluble creating a negective feedback loop that accelarates warning. A) True B) False Question 25 (4 points) Which of the following is an example of bycatching? AJ A fishing fleet destroys a coral reef while they bottomtrawl for shelfish 8) Fishermen accidentally catch sea turtles while drift netting for pelagic fish. Fishing fleets surround a marine reserve and try to capture any fish entering and eaving the reserve. C D) A shark is captured and killed because it keeps swimming by a crowded public beach. Canadian fishermen switch to catching capelin because of the moratorium on cod fishing

Explanation / Answer

Question 22: All of the following are true of ocean currents EXCEPT-

Answer:(D) They are always rapid and powerful.

Explanation: Ocean currents are the masses of ocean water that may be occur at surfacial or deeper level, moved from one place to another place. Ocean currents are driven by wind, gravity, density differences (this differences occur due to change in temperature and salinity of the water masses). There are some wind driven surface currents or density-temperature-salinity driven deep currents. Deep currents are slower than surface currents. So, all the ocean currents are not always rapid and powerful.

Question23: What is not considered as greenhouse gas?

Answer: (A) Water vapour.

Explanation: Nitrous oxide and halocarbons both are greenhouse gases. Nitrous oxides are emitted from industrial and agricultural fields, combustion of fuels etc. Halocarbons like CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), HCFCs(hydrochlorofluorocarbons) are produced by human activity from air conditions, fire retardants etc. But, water vapour is not considered as greenhouse gas. Rather than, it is considered as feedback. Feedbacks are those which are activated due to other factors. Due to increase of CO2 in the atmosphere, temperature increases and evaporation also increases. Thus, water vapour amount in the atmosphere will increase due to side effect of CO2. So, water vapour is not considered as greenhouse gas though it absorbs thermal IR energy. Water vapour doesnot change the global temperature, rather than it is controlled by temperature.

Question 24: As oceans warm, gases like CO2 are less soluble creating a negative feedback loop that accelarates warming.

Answer: (B) False.

Explanation: The ocean is acting as a good sink for CO2 by absorbing CO2 gas into the surface of water. Thus, it rises the temperature of atmosphere and also rises the temperature of ocean water. As, ocean water warms, solubility of CO2 decreases in the water increases the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Thus, amount of CO2 increases in the atmosphere. So, it is a positive feedback loop which causes warming of the atmosphere.

Question 25: which of the following is the example of bycatching?

Answer: (B) Fisherman accidentally catch sa turtles while drift netting for pelagic fish.

Explanation: Drift netting is a type of fishing technique, where nets are used to capture pelagic fish. But during fishing, sometime bycatching occur by accidentally caputuring of non-target species like sea turtle, dolphines, whales, sharks etc. This type of activity is harmful for marine life and marine ecosystem.
