Question
1. What is meant by the term ‘global information systems’?
2. The European Union has stricter privacy laws than the United States, and not many US companies are willing to comply with the EU Directive on Data Protection. How would you resolve the conflict?
3. Decision Support Systems use models to process data. Explain what a model is. Give two examples.
4. What is a sensitivity test? Give two example.
5. How could you use a Geographic information System to schedule your classes? Give an example.
Explanation / Answer
Global information system (GIS) is a system of hardware and software used for storage, retrieval, mapping and analysis of geographic data. GIS is one of the most used computer systems right now, which is used by almost every professionals in different fields including development mapping, scientific investigations, resource management, emergency planning, in crime control sector. The application varies with its purpose from simple layouts, thematic mapping representing huge data sets to complex, statistical and mathematical modeling. As mentioned in the question already, the European Union has developed better, stricter privacy law for data protection. The current law The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is an important one in this regard, which emphasizes charge of the consumer in handling their personal data. This law lets users gain access to, as well as correct information in the dataset. It gives the consumer’s right to transfer their data to the user from another organization. Every company here must define their system of making data secure. Obviously, breaking these rules allow makers to charge big fines, from 1 to 4% of one company’s worldwide turnover. In this digital age, this new greatly improved law proves to serve the best to policymakers, various kinds of dealers. So how many US companies may find it difficult to continue their data policy in EU. This is not the case that the US is not concerned about their data security and policies, but has no law regarding it is based on the fact that the Constitution and legislatures at both the federal and state levels value competing policy objective. Now the world is looking up to what steps America will take for better, safer protection of their data. In this scenario, America should revise their privacy policies, at least once not only to compete and cope up with the European Union but for its native’s security as well. So it is high time for the States to step up, in terms of the development and implementation of privacy policies and principles. Decision Support System (DSS) is an interactive software-based system, supporting business purposes mainly. Here organizers compile useful information from raw data, documents, personal knowledge, business models and try to identify and solve problems. Pictorial representation always gives a better view of any problem, be it scientific or economic that is why every professional try to view and solve their problems by giving a visual presentation of the problem. This is a great tool for decision making in biggest policies. From medical diagnosis to agricultural production, it has various applications. The term “sensitivity test” is most commonly associated with medical science, but it does not restrict in medical science. In many areas of research, it becomes important to know what proportion of things will give the positive result to a particular test. Here comes the sensitivity test. So this test yields the true positive rate. For example - in a medical research, one wants to know what proportion of his countries have the tendency toward obesity, he or she can perform such a test. Secondly in earth science study. If one wants to know what proportion of the population in one place belongs to a particular rock type, the positive rate for this rock type can be calculated by performing this test. Nowadays, these tests are performed easily with software. Now, I must clarify here that I have a good theoretical knowledge about GIS, but no practical experience of working with GIS, so I am not able to answer the last question clearly, But I think, if one compiles the all data - information about the student’s mobile number or email address, teacher’s contact information as well, the availability of classrooms in particular time, assembling all information layouts can be made up with the help of software available, then classes can be scheduled accordingly.
