Question
Free Response: The diagram shows a ballistic pendulum. A 200 g bullet is fired into the suspended 4 kg block of wood and remains embedded inside it (a perfectly inelastic collision). After bullet, the block swings up to a maximum height h. The initial speed of the bullet was 50 m/s. What was the momentum of the bullet before the collision? What was the kinetic energy of the bullet before the collision? *what was the velocity of the bullet-block system just after the collision? *what was the total kinetic energy of the bullet-block system after the collision? *.What is the maximum possible potential energy of the bullet-block system when it reaches its maximum height? *What is the maximum possible height of the bullet-block system?Explanation / Answer
AS PER CHEGG GUIDELINES, ONLY FIRST FOUR SUB-QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED BY THE EXPERT. PLEASE ASK REMAINING SUB-QUESTIONS SEPARATELY.
a) Momentum of the bullet before collision would be P = mv = 0.2 x 50 = 10 Kgm/s.
b) Kinetic energy would be 0.5mv² = 0.5x0.2x50x50 = 250 J.
c) Since net external force on the bullet-block system is 0, their momentum would be conserved. Hence, P=(M+m)V
=> V = 10/(0.2+4) = 2.38 m/s
d) After the collision, kinetic energy of the system would be 0.5(M+m)V² = 11.9 J.
