Question

In discussing electric current flow, we specified three principles known as Kirchoff's laws that help us calculate what current flows there will be in any circuit. Furthermore, we developed a number of analogies to help us think about electric current. Pick one of Kirchoff's laws and one of the analogies. State the law clearly and describe how an analogy helps you think about it. If none of our analogies help you think about Kirchoff's laws, or if they confuse you when thinking about the laws, explain why and give a particular example. In the Figure below is shown a schematic diagram of a circuit consisting of a battery, 3 identical bulbs, and a switch. Assume that the battery is perfect (has no internal resistance) and the connecting wires are ideal (they have no resistance). In addition, you have an ideal ammeter, and an ideal voltmeter. The resistors are labeled R_1, R_2, and R_3. In addition, two contact points are marked in the circuit and labeled 1 and 2. For each of the cases (a)-(f) below, assume you are starting from the configuration shown but with the switch closed and then perform the action described. Complete the sentence by selecting one of the following letters that describes how the indicated quantity changes: increases (I), remains the same (S), decreases but does not go to zero (D), becomes zero (0). a. If the switch is opened, the current through the resistor R_2 b. If the switch is opened, the voltage drop across the resistor R_1 c. If the switch is opened, the current flowing through the battery d. If the ammeter is connected between points 1 and 2 (in parallel with R_3), the current in R_3 e. If the voltmeter is connected between points 1 and 2 (in parallel with R_3), the current in R_3 f. If the ammeter is connected into the circuit at point 1 (in series with R_3), the current in R_3

Explanation / Answer

a)remains same S

Becoz R1 is parallel to battery.

b)remains same S

Same current V=IR

C)decrease D.

As effective resistance Increases current will decteases

d)becomes zero 0

Ideal ammetre will havezero resistance....total current will flow from ammeter.

e)S

f)S
