Question

A parallel combination of three capacitors (C1 = 1 mu F, C2-3 mu F and C3 = 6 mu F) is connected in series to a resistor R=1.4 M Ohm and emf source of element = 125 V. Initially, the capacitors are uncharged, and the charging begins when the switch is closed. Draw a diagram showing all the circuit elements as described. Find the equivalent capacitance Ceq of the capacitor combination. After the switch is kept on for a very long time. Find the magnitude of charge in each capacitor. Find the potential difference across each capacitor.

Explanation / Answer

b) As three capacitors are in parallel, so equivalent capacitance = C = C1 + C2 + C3

C = 1 + 3 + 6 = 10 uF

c) Charge on C1 = Q1 = C1*V = 1*125 = 125 uC

  Charge on C2 = Q2 = C2*V = 3*125 = 375 uC

Charge on C3 = Q3 = C3*V = 6*125 = 750 uC

d) Potential difference across each capacitor = 125 V
