Question
. Describe what would happen to the temperatures of the Indian Ocean, temperatures of the South Atlantic Ocean, and ultimately the meridional overturning circulation if the Indonesian Throughflow were closed off. . Describe what would happen to the temperatures of the Indian Ocean, temperatures of the South Atlantic Ocean, and ultimately the meridional overturning circulation if the Indonesian Throughflow were closed off. . Describe what would happen to the temperatures of the Indian Ocean, temperatures of the South Atlantic Ocean, and ultimately the meridional overturning circulation if the Indonesian Throughflow were closed off.Explanation / Answer
An important feature of the Indonesian Throughflow is that because the water in the western equatorial Pacific Ocean has a higher temperature and lower salinity than the water in the Indian Ocean, the Throughflow transports large amounts of relatively warm and fresh water to the Indian Ocean. Thus if Indonesian Throughflow were blocked the water in the Indian Ocean would become cooler because it would not recieve the warm water from the throughflow. This would also be the case with the South Atlantic ocean.
