Question
Astronomy Question--Energy Level Transitions. The following labeled transitions represent an electron moving between energy levels in hydrogen. Answer each of the following questions and explain your answers.
Which transition could represent an atom that absorbs a photon with 10.2 eV of energy?
Which transition could represent an atom that emits a photon with 10.2 eV of energy?
Which transition represents an electron that is breaking free of the atom?
Which transition as shown is not possible?
Would transition A represent emission or absorption of light? How would the wavelength of the emitted or absorbed photon compare to that of the photon involved in transition C? Explain.
Explanation / Answer
transition B represents an atom that absorbs a photon with 10.2 eV
transition C represents an atom that emits a photon with 10.2 eV.
transition E represents an electron that is breaking free of the atoms.
Transition D shown is not possible.
transition A represents emission of photons or light. compared to the transition C the wavelength of the emitted photon is less than the wavelength in transition A, because in transition C energy of the photon is less .therfore wavelength of the emitted photon is less.
