Exercise 8.54 A 1200-kg SUV is moving along a straight highway at 12.0 m/s. Another car, with mass 1800 kg and speed 20.0 m/s, has its center of mass 40.0 m ahead of the center of mass of the SUV (Figure 1) Figure 1 of 1 1800 kg 1200 kg 2.0 20.0 m/s 40.0 m Find the position of the center of mass of the system consisting of the two cars. Explanation / Answer

A)

Assume SUV at the origin,

m1=1200kg, m2=1800kg, x1=0.0m, x2=40.0m

XCM = (m1x1+m2x2)/(m1+m2) = (1200*0+1800*40)/(1200+1800) = 24.0 m

Thus CM of two car system is 24.0 ahead of SUM or (40.0-24.0)=16.0 behind the leading car

B)

P1= m1v1+mvx2 = 1200*12.0+1800*20.0 = 50400kg*m/s

C)

VCM = (m1v1+mvx2)/(m1+m2) = (1200*12.0+1800*20.0)/(1200+1800) = 16.8 m

D)

P2= M*VCM = (1200+1800)*16.8 = 50400 kg*m/s

E)

P1=P2
