Question
True or False. Please explain your answers.
a) If an object is moving at a constant velocity we can conclude that there are no external forces acting on it.
b) An object accelerates in a given direction. This means that the net force on that object must be in that same direction.
Discuss why the following three statements are false
c) A baseball is hit by a bat into the air. If we neglect frictional forces due to air drag, the forces on the ball while it is moving through the air are the gravitational force, and the contact force from the bat hitting the ball.
d) The only force exerted on a book resting on a horizontal table is the gravitational force. The table does not exert a force on the book¾it is just in the way of the book, preventing it from falling toward the earth.
e) By Newton's Third Law, the force applied by a horse on a carriage is equal and opposite to the force applied by the carriage on the horse. Therefore, the net force on a carriage being pulled by a horse is always 0.
Explanation / Answer
a) Correct as if net force is zero then net acceleration will also be zero so it is True
b) Direction of net force is same as direction of net acceleration so True
c) When it is moving in the air there is no contact force, so there is only one force which is due to gravity so it is false
d) Table also exert equal and opposite force and due to this net force become zero and book do not move
e) Net force on the system will be zero but net force on the carriage will not be zero as there is not force acting on carriage here other than the pull force
