Question
Choices are: Increase, Decrease, No Change
1. The cylinder is replaced with one that has the same height and diameter, but with density of 0.89 g/cm3.
2. A liquid with a density of 1.06 g/cm3 is poured into the glass.
3. A liquid with a density of 0.76 g/cm3 is poured into the glass.
4. The cylinder is replaced with one that has the same density and height, but 1.5× the diameter.
5. The cylinder is replaced with one that has the same density and diameter, but with half the height.
6. More tinted water is added to the glass.
Explanation / Answer
1. X will decrease beacuse density increases. For obvious reasons, as denser objects tend to sink more.
2.X will remain the same. Since the liquids don't mix, the denser liquid will move towards the bottom and remain there causing no disturbance to our cylinder.
3.X will increase as the cylinder will get extra buoyant force due to the other liquid this time because this liquid layer remains on top of the water.
4. With same density and height but incresed diameter means increase in mass. So more gravity, hence it will tend to go down. So X will decrease.
