Question

Suppose that the rod in Fig. 22–12 moves to the left, so that the area enclosed by the conducting path decreases at the rate of 1.0 103 cm2/s. Find the magnitude and direction of the current if the resistance of the conduct- ing path is 0.10 and the magnetic field strength is 0.50 T. ***Please show work and include any additional drawings if helpful. Induced current Outward magnetic field X X K X produced by Area A ex induced current Inward magnetic field produced by magnet

Explanation / Answer

e = -dphi/dt

phi = B*A

e = -d(BA)/dt

dA/dt = 1 x 10^3 cm^2/s = 1 x 10^3 x 10^-4 m^2/s = -0.1 m^2/s

B = 0.50 T

e = 0.50 * 0.1 = 0.05 V

I = e/R = 0.05/0.10 = 0.5 A
