Question
Hi, Can you please solve this question, there's two parts. Thanks in advance.
A fixed resistor R is in series with a variable resistor and an ideal battery. Originally the resistances are the same.
Part A) As the resistance of the variable resitor is decreased, the current through the variable resistor will
A) increases B) decreases C) remains the same D) cannot be determined
Part B) As the resistance of the variable resistor is decreased, the potential difference across the variable resistor
A) increases B) decreases C) remains the same D) cannot be determined
Explanation / Answer
in this question we will simply use the ohms law for part 1
V=IR SO I=V/R so now consiredring the case when the value of R decreses which here clerly shows that the value of current will incresae because there is inverse relation so as resistence decreases current will increse so option A will be correct
V=voltage I=current R=resistence
so for the second part of the question again considering the ohms law if the value of variable resistor will decrease then from V=IR here poteinal difference is directly perportional to the value of resistance so in this case the potenial difference will decrese with decrese in the value of resistence so option B is correct for the second part of the question.
