Question

Block 1 and 2 slide on a frictionless track with masses and velocities as shown in the figure below. The side walls are glued, so both blocks stick together after the collision. (a) Find die initial momentum of the block 1, block 2, and the block 1-2 (total) system. (b) Find the final momentum and the final velocity (magnitude and direction) of the block 1-2 (total) system. (c) Now we removed the glues on both blocks and let them collide with the same masses and velocities They bounced after the collision. The change in momentum for block 2 is delta p_2 = 24 kg m/s. Find the final velocities (magnitude and direction) of block 1 and 2.

Explanation / Answer

(b)

Apply conservation momentum

m1 u1 + m2 u2 = ( m1 + m2) v

v= 3* 8 + (4) (-1)/3+ 4

=2.85 m/s

Pf = ( m1+ m2) v = ( 3+4) 2.85 = 20 kg m/s

v1 = m1- m2/m1+ m2 * u1 + 2m2/ m1 + m2 * u2

= 3-4/3+4 * 8+ 2 ( 4)/3+ 4 * ( -1)

=-2.28 m/s

delp2= m2 ( vf- vi)

24= 4( vf- (-1)

24 = 4vf+ 4

vf= v2 = 5 m/s
