Object m2 is resting on the floor, and object m1 is 4,80 m above the floor when it is released from rest. The pulley axis is frictionless. The cord is light, does not stretch, and does not slip on the pulley. (a) Calculate the time interval required for m1 to hit the floor, 4t (b) How would your answer change if the pulley were massless? 4t. Explanation / Answer

here,

m1 = 21 kg , m2 = 10.7 kg

M = 5 kg , R = 0.14 m

h = 4.8 m

a)

the accelration of the system , a1 = net force /effective mass

a1 = ( m1 - m2) * g /( m1 + m2 + 0.5 * m * r^2 /r^2)

a1 = ( 21 - 10.7) * 9.81 /( 21 + 10.7 + 0.5 * 5)

a1 = 2.95 m/s^2

let the time taken to reach floor be t

h = u * t + 0.5 * a * t^2

4.8 = 0 + 0.5 * 2.95 * t^2

t = 1.8 s

b)

when the pulley is massless , M = 0

the accelration of the system , a2 = net force /effective mass

a2 = ( m1 - m2) * g /( m1 + m2 + 0.5 * 0 * r^2 /r^2)

a2 = ( 21 - 10.7) * 9.81 /( 21 + 10.7)

a2 = 3.25 m/s^2

let the time taken to reach floor be t1

h = u * t + 0.5 * a2 * t1^2

4.8 = 0 + 0.5 * 3.25 * t1^2

t1 = 1.72 s
