Question
Go find an appliance at home with a label that lists its power. Draw and label the appliance, then tell me that power. In the USA, the plug in the wall maintains a potential difference of 120 V (actually it’s alternating rapidly back and forth between ±120 V, 60 times per second, but ignore that) .
a. How much current will this appliance pull from the wall while operating?
b. If we treat this appliance as a resistor, what would its resistance be?
c. If you wired two outlets together in just such a way as to double the voltage going to the appliance (not realistic or safe, but just pretend), then calculate the power, resistance, and current for this device in the new situation.
Use a average toaster which will use around 1200 watts(power).
Explanation / Answer
a. current=I=P/V=1200/120=10 amps
b.resistance=R=V2/P=1202/1200=12 ohms
c. Voltage is doubled by arranged connection of two appliances -ie- V=Vx2=120x2=240 volts
Now,
Total power=P =P+P=2P=2x1200=2400 watts
Total current=I=P/V= 2400/240= 10 amps
Total resistance=R=V/I=240/10 =24 ohms
