Question

Hi, can someone please help me with the following questions? Thanks

The picture shows three identical balls. The balls labelled 2 and 3 are in contact. The line connecting their centres is bisected by the path of ball 1. The speed of ball 1 is v_0 = 15.12 m/s. The trajectory of ball passes through the point at which balls 2 and 3 come into contact. Let us assume the collision is elastic. Determine the magnitude of the velocity of ball 2. v = ms^-1 Determine the magnitude of the velocity of ball 3 after the collision. v = ms^-1 Determine the magnitude of the velocity of ball 1 after the collision v = ms^-1

Explanation / Answer

By geometry, the angle red balls go with x axis is 30 degree.

By momentum conservation,

mvo = mv1 + 2mv2 cos 30 degree

15.12 = v1 + 1.732 v2

By energy conservation,

  0.5 mvo^2 = 0.5 mv1^2 +2*0.5mv2^2

  15.12^2 = (15.12-1.732v2)^2 + 2v2^2

   0 = - 15.12*2*1.732*v2 + 3v^2 + 2v^2

  V2 = 1.732*30.24/5 = 10.5 m/s

B)v =10.5 m/s

C) v1= 15.12-1.732*10.5

   = 3.07 m/s answer
