Question

In our previous study, Epsilon_0 and Mu_0, were values used to balance units. We also used Epsilon (permittivity) and M (permeability) to indicate how various materials polarize and magnetize. But vacuum doesn't have anything to polarize or magnetize. How do we reconcile these? The index of refraction is defined as the ratio of the speed of light in vacuum to the speed of tight in a material, n = c/v. Since c is an (apparently) absolute speed limit in the universe, all n are greater than 1. If n is known, we can use the definition to determine the speed of light in a material. For example, if n = 2, then v = c/n = c/2. So the speed of light in the material is 1/2 the speed of light in vacuum. Find the speed of light in diamond.

Explanation / Answer

3) Refractive index of diamond is 2.42

So 2.42 = c/v

v = 3*10^8/2.42 = 123966942.1 m/s
