Question
Please help with a, c, and d!
A stationary particle of charge q = 2.2 times 10^-8 C is placed in a laser beam (an electromagnetic wave) whose intensity is 2.3 times 10^3 W/m^2. Determine the maximum magnitude of the (a) electric and (b) magnetic forces exerted on the charge. If the charge is moving at a speed of 3.7 times 10^4 m/s perpendicular to the magnetic field of the electromagnetic wave, find the maximum magnitudes of the (c) electric and (d) magnetic forces exerted on the particle. (a) F = (b) F = (c) F = (d) =Explanation / Answer
part A:
Use Intensity I = Power/area = 0.5 eo E^2
where E is Correspoding electric field
eo is permittivity constant
so
2.3*10^3 = 0.5* 8.85 *10^-12 * E^2
E = 2.27 *10^7 N/C
Electric force F = E q
where q is charge
so
F = 2.2*10^-8 * 2.27 *10^7
F = 0.5 N
------------------------
part B:
magnetif force F = q v B
F = 0 as charge is at rest.
part C:
when charge is in motion.
Electric force is same as that of part A
as F = E q doesnot depend of velocity.
part D:
magnetic force F = q v B
E = Bc
B = E/c
F = 2.2 *10^-8 * 3.7 *10^4 * (2.27 *10^7)/(3*10^8)
F = magnetic force = 6.15 *10^-5 N
