Question

In a rectangular coordinate system, a positive point charge q = 4.00 nC is placed at the point x= 0.230 m , y=0, and an identical point charge is placed at x= -0.230 m , y=0. Find the x and y components and the magnitude and direction of the electric field at the following points.

Part F: Find the x and y components of the electric field at x= 0.230 m , y= -0.350 m .

Part G: Find the magnitude of the electric field at x=0.230 m , y= -0.350 m .

Part H:Find the direction of the electric field at x=0.230 m , y= -0.350 m

.

Explanation / Answer

a) Ex at x= x=0.230 = K ( 4 x 10^-9)/ ( 0.230)^2 N/C = 680.529 N/C and y component = 0 N/C

angle between both charges and y = - 0.350 m = tan^-1 ( 0.350/ 0.230) = 56.69 degree apprx

distance between both charges an d y coordiante = sqroot ( 0.230^2 + 0.350^2) = sqroot (0.0529 +0.1225) = sqroot (0.1754)

Ey = 2 ( K ) ( 4x 10^-9) sin 56.69 / 0.1754 = 343.05 N/C apprx

b) E = sqroot (Ex^2 + Ey^2) = 762.105 N/C

c) tan^-1 ( 343.05/680.529) = 26.752 degree apprx
