Question

A schematic diagram of a refractive microscope is shown in (Figure 1) . The focal length of the objective lens is 25 mm, that of the eyepiece lens is 81 mm , and the two lenses are 200 mm apart. The object is 30 mmaway from the objective lens.

Explanation / Answer

for objective lens 1

object distance s1 = 30 mm

focal length f1 = 25 mm

from lens equation

1/s1 + 1/s1' = 1/f

1/30 + 1/s1' = 1/25

image distacne s1' = 150 mm

magnification m1 = -s1'/s1 = -150/30 = -5

for lens 2

object distance s2 = 200 - 150 = 50 mm

focal length f2 = +81 mm

1/s2 + 1/s2' = 1/f2

1/50 + 1/s2' = 1/81

s2' = -130.6 mm <<<--------answer

============================

magnification m2 = -s2'/s2 = 130.6/50 = 2.612

part B

overall magnification M = m1*m2 = -5*2.612 = -13.1 <<<<<------answer
