Question
A company is introducing a new product called "Joulies" which are small stainless steel balls filled with a material that undergoes a phase change from solid to liquid at 60 degree C. The company claims that when put into a hot drink in an insulated cup, the " Joulies" will rapidly cool the drink to 60 degree C and then the drink will remain at this temperature for a long time. Do you believe the claims of the company? If so, explain how the "Joulies" can cool the drink but then keep it warm. If not, explain why they are incorrect.Explanation / Answer
The Joulies cool the drink by absorbing the heat from the drink to spend it for phase change of the material inside the steel balls. The material absorbs latent heat of fusion from the drink to change its phase from solid to liquid cooling the drink down.
Once the temperature reaches 600C and the temperature of the drink tries to fall down further, the phase change in the Joulies's material starts again, this time in reverse direction, i.e., the liquid material starts to change its phase to soild releasing the latent heat of fusion into the drink keeping its warm...
That's how the "Joulies" works.
