Question

One method of measuring the density of a liquid is illustrated in the figure. One side of the U-tube is in the liquid being tested, and the other side is in water of density 1000 kg/m3.

The air is partially removed at the upper part of the tube and the valve is closed. The height of the water above its pool surface is 0.77 m.The height of the liquid above its pool surface is 0.48 m.The difference in the heights of the pool surfaces is 0.14 m.

Find the density of the liquid on the left. Answer in units of kg/m3.

Valve 0.77 m 0.48 in 0.14 m. test liquid

Explanation / Answer

In comparision to test liquid , the height of column of water = 0.77 +0.14=0.91 m

height of column of test liquid = 0.48 m

0.91 m = 1000 kg/m3

therfore for 0.48 m , =1000x0.48/0.91

527.47 kg/m3
