Question
In a particular Specific Heat experiment a calorimeter is initially filled with 150 grams of water at an initial temperature of 23. degree C. Then 80. grams of water initially at 100. degree C is poured into the Calorimeter. A. At what temperature does the system reach thermal equilibrium? B. How much thermal energy was transferred from the initially hot water to the initially cold water? C) A calorimeter is filled with 100 grams of water initially at 28 degree C. Then a 15.0 gram sample material, initially at 100 degree C, is placed in the calorimeter. The system comes to thermal equilibrium at 76 degree C. What is the Specific Heat of the Sample?Explanation / Answer
a) Let the equilibrium temperature be T
Heat gained = Heat lost
m1*c*(T- 23) = m2*c*(100 - T)
or 150(T - 23) = 80( 100 - T)
or 230*T = 8000 + 3450 = 11450
or T = 49.78 oC
b) Thermal energy transferred , Q = m2*c*(100 - T) = 80*4.18*(100 - 49.78) = 16792.7 J
c) can be calculated using the above method.
