Question

D My Notes. Ask Your Teach 2. -16 points YF13 36. P.017. A single-slit diffraction pattern is formed by monochromatic electromagnetic radiation from a distant source passing through a slit 0.115 mm wide. At the point in the pattern 3.75 from the center of the central maximum, the total phase difference between wavelets from the top and the bottom of the slit is 47.0 rad. (a) What is the wavelength of radiation? Hm (b) What is the intensity at this point, if the intensity at the center of the central maximum is Io? x Io

Explanation / Answer

phase difference = 2 pi deltax / lambda

deltax = d sin(theta)

47 rad = 2 pi (0.115 x 10^-3) sin(3.75) / lambda

lambda = 1 x 10^-6 m or 1 um .......Ans(A)

(B) I = Imax (cos(phi/2))^2

I = Imax ( cos(47/2))^2

I = 0.84 Io

Ans: 0.84
