Question

Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock wake up in a windowless jail cell after attending a peace conference on Earth. They have been stripped of their weapons and their tricorder. Kirk sees swinging a Vulcan medallion on a long chain. Spock quickly assures the captain not to worry since they are likely still on Earth, or, at the very ship built by humans. Explain how Spock could know this by only swinging his pendant with a small amplitude. A sound engineer is designing a new amphitheatre. He places a microphone between two speakers to measure the volume at that position in the theater. He plays pure tone of 40Hz through both speakers simultaneously. The engineer moves the microphone to the right parallel to the wall with the speakers (as shown). He makes a short recording at the beginning, middle and endpoint. Describe the sound recorded by the microphone at these different locations and describe the cause of any differences in the recorded sound. Next, she turns the right speaker off and then records the sound from the left speaker as he moves away (to the right) from it. Describe the sound recorded by the microphone at these different locations and describe any changes to the sound.

Explanation / Answer

By swinging the pendant he noticed its time period which is time taken for one oscillation

Now

After noting the time period and using relation

T = 2*pi(L/g)^0.5

He calculated g estimating the value of length L of the pendant

Which comes out to be 9.8 m/s^2 and matches with the accelerational due to gravity of earth.
