Question
The diagram shows four thermometers, labeled W, X, Y, and Z. The freezing and boiling points of water are indicated. Rank the thermometers according to the size of a degree on their scales, smallest to largest.
W: fp = 0, bp = 100 (celcius)
X: fp = 45, bp = 125
Y: fp = 55, bp = 175
Z: fp = 35, bp = 75
In the picture, the freezing points and boiling points are separated by the same distance for each thermometer.
Ans: Z, X, W, Y
Please explain why. The phrasing "size of a degree" is tripping me up.
Explanation / Answer
size of a degree on scales of thermometer W-
bp - fp = 100 - 0 = 100 oC
size of a degree on scales of thermometer X-
125 - 45 = 80 oC
size of a degree on scales of thermometer Y-
175 - 55 = 120 oC
size of a degree on scales of thermometer Z-
75 - 35 = 40 oC
Ranking of thermometers according to size of degrees (smallest to largest),
Z(40) > X(80) > W(100) > Y(120)
Z < X < W < Y
