Question

Determine the electric field strength at a point 1.00 cm to the left of the middle charge shown in the figure below. (Enter the magnitude of the electric field only.) If a charge of -7.01 mu C is placed at this point, what are the magnitude and direction of the force on it? A proton accelerates from rest in a uniform electric field of 626 N/C. At some later time, its speed is 1.06 times 10^6 m/s. Find the magnitude of the acceleration of the proton. How long does it take the proton to reach this speed? How far has it moved in that interval? What is its kinetic energy at the later time?

Explanation / Answer

13)  F = m a = E q

a = E q / m

for proton, m = 1.67 * 10-27 kg, q = 1.6 * 10-19 C

a = (626 * 1.6 * 10-19 / 1.67 * 10-27) = 5.99 * 1010 m/s2

b) v(f) = v(i) + at

t = v(f) / a = 1.06 * 106 / 5.99 * 1010= 1.77 * 10-5 s

c) x = (1/2) a t2 + v(i) * t

x = (1/2) a t2 = 1/2 * 5.99 * 1010 * (1.77 * 10-5)2= 9.38 m

d) KE = (1/2) m v2

= 1/2 * 1.67 * 10-27 * (1.06 * 106)2= 9.38 * 10-16 J
