Question

Hello! I am not sure how to anwer these questions and was wondering if anyone could help.

Electric fields occur in nature as part of what we call weather (thunderstorms). Can you explain why lightning rods work as protection for buildings or structures? During a lightning storm why would you want to avoid trees and lie low in a depression? Clouds are charged, sometimes at opposite potentials. An airplane is made of metal (electrode) and not electrically tied to anything (floating electrically). Is there any danger for passengers? And why or why not is that the case? 1. 2. 3.

Explanation / Answer

1.

the lightning rods are connected deep into the ground . this lighting rod is usually a good conductor. when the lighting falls on the building , it strikes the rod and travels through it instead of travelling through the buiding (Since it is better conductor as compared to building), and thus protects the building from any damage

2.

on trees , the lightning will fall on the person and since person is not in contact with the ground directly , it travels through the whole body before traveling to earth damaging the vital parts. In low depression position on earth , the electric field comes in from one leg and go out from the other leg , hence vital parts of the body remains unaffected.
