Question
Hello,
The problem is asking me to consider the speed of light in different materials. The first material it asks me to solve for is water. The problem gives me that n=1333 for water and asks me to solve for the speed of light in this material. I used the relationship of n(material)=c/v(material) with the material being water in this case. After I isolated Vwater, the expression looked like Vwater=c/nwater. Vwater= (3x10^8)/1333 = 225056.3. I entered this into Expert TA and it says my answer is off by a factor of 10^n. what am I doing wrong? Please help thank you.
Explanation / Answer
Please Recheck your problem,
Correct value of n in question should be
n = refractive index of water = 1.333 (not 1333)
Above value is a standard value for water, you should memorize it. It never changes.
Now
Vwater = c/nwater
Vwater = 3*10^8/(1.333) = 225056264 m/sec
Vwater = 225056.3*10^3 m/sec
