AP* Physics 1: Momentum Free Response Name: Masun own Period: S Date: /7 / 7 Question 1 A 15.o-kg wagon with wheels that turn with negligible friction travels to the right at 5.0 m/s on a horizontal surface with negligible friction as shown in the diagram. When the wagon reaches Point A, a 5.0-kg mass is placed upon the wagon. v=5.0 m/s 5.0 kg (a) Determine the magnitude of the momentum of the wagon before the mass is placed upon it. (b) Determine the speed of the wagon after the mass is placed upon it.Explanation / Answer
momentum before putting mass
P= mv= 15*5= 75 kgm/s
momentum after collision
P= (m1+m2)V= (15+5) V= 20 V
applying conservation of momentum
momentum before collision= momentum after collision
75= 20 V
V= 3.75 m/s
