Question
8. Describe the three basic mechanisms of heat transfer.
9. Describe the process in which Earth’s atmosphere is heated.
CHAPTER 17 REVIEW QUESTIONS
1. Summarize the processes by which water changes from one state of matter to another.
2. Explain the principle of the sling psychrometer.
3. Why does air cool when it rises through the atmosphere?
4. How do orographic lifting and frontal wedging act to force air to rise?
5. Explain why the Great Basin area of the Western United States is so dry.
6. What is the function of the condensation nuclei in cloud formation?
7. Why are high clouds always thin?
8. What is the difference between precipitation and condensation?
9. List the forms of precipitation and the circumstances of their formation.
Explanation / Answer
8. conduction , convection and radiation
conduction is a method in which transfer of heat takes place between two surface in contact ,
in convection the transfer of heat can be without contact for example we feel hot when we go near a fire
but in radiation heat is trafered with out medium for example infrared rays of sun
9.the infra red rays enters the earth atmosphere they then get reflected by the surface of the earth. then the infra red rays are entraped by the co2 and other gaes which causes the heatning of the atmosphere
chapter 17:-
1. heat is absorped when ice changes to water(melting) or when water changes to water vapour(evapouration) or when solid directly changes to gas (sublimation)
reverse of this takes place when vapour is condensed to water then to ice
2. the lower the relative humidity, the the more evapouration will be there from wet bulb thermometer and vice verso , so the closer together the wet and dry bulb temperatures are , higher the relative humidity
