Question

webwork. phys.yorku.ca/wet1 THE PROBLEM Suppose you have an endless supply of llght bulbs, and all of them operate at P-20 W You want to connect them in parallel and power them from a standard E-120 volt wall outlet. The circuit breaker will open the clrcuit if the current cxceeds -25 A Calculate the maximum number ot light bulbs you can use In parallel. PAPER SOLUTION Solve the problem on paper first, Including all four IDEA steps. You wl become a better physlcist that way! Have you finished your paper solution already? INTERPRET DEVELOP Derive an algebraic expression for the maximum number. In your answer, type E to represent E EVALUATE ASSESS

Explanation / Answer

Power of each light bulb = 20W

Voltage = 120V

Since, bulbs are in parallel to each other voltage through each bulb = 120V

P = VI

I = P/V

I = 20/120 = 1/6A

Current through each bulb = 1/6A

Threshold current of circuit braker = 25A

Maximum number of bulbs = 25/(1/6) = 150 bulbs
